Mira Costa High Ranks in Top 100 California High Schools

Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach has ranked 42nd within California and 274th nationally, according to the 2017 U.S. News and World Report's annual list of the best high schools in the country. The annual list ranks schools based on their students' performance on state-required tests as well as how well they prepare students for college.

Hawthorne Math and Science Academy in Hawthorne earned the No. 8 spot for California with the Los Angeles Enrichment Center coming in at No. 10. Pacific Collegiate Charter School, a charter and STEM high school in Santa Cruz was named as the best high school in California (Nationally, the school ranked as the 10th best high school); Oxford Academy, a public STEM high school in Cypress, ranked as the second best in the state, followed by Gretchen Whitney High School, a public STEM high school in Cerritos, ranking as the third best high school in California.

Hawthorne Math and Science Academy, No. 8 in California, is the only school in the Hawthorne School District and has a 96% minority enrollment. It has a 99% graduation rate, an 89.0 college readiness rating, and was awarded a Gold Medal by U.S. News and World Report. It is a charter high school.

Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies, No. 10 in the state, is 1 of 247 high schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District, with a 97% graduation rate, an 87.8 college readiness rating, a Gold Medal from the magazine, and 72% minority enrollment. It is a magnet high school.

Palos Verdes High School in Palos Verdes Estates ranked No. 85 in California and No. 498 nationally. The public high school is a STEM school with a 100% graduation rate, 56.1 college readiness rating, and a Gold Medal Award from the magazine. It is one of three high schools in the school district and has a 30% minority enrollment.

Redondo Union High School in Redondo Beach ranked at No. 141 in California and No. 844 nationally. The public high school has a 95% graduation rate, 47.2 college readiness, and a Silver Medal honor from U.S. News and World Report. Its minority enrollment is 53%.

El Segundo High School in El Segundo came in at No. 93 in California and No. 536 nationally, with a 96% graduation rate, a 54.6 college readiness rating, a Silver Medal, and a 30% minority enrollment. It is one of two high schools in the El Segundo Unified School District.

Lennox Mathematics, Science and Technology Academy in the Lennox School District ranked No. 11 in California, with a 98% graduation rate, 87.7 college readiness, Gold Medal, and has a 100% minority enrollment. It is a charter high school.

The California Academy of Mathematics and Science in Carson, and one of 12 high schools in the Long Beach Unified School District, ranked No. 15 in California, with a 99% graduation rate, a 78.6 college readiness rating, a Gold Medal and an 89% minority enrollment. It is a magnet high school.

A total of 6,041 schools were ranked; 500 received gold medals, 2,109 schools received silver medals, and the remaining 3,432 schools received bronze medals, and were ranked nationally.
